Thanks :)

That being the case, are there modules required for Chemistry that CORS will not auto-allocate, which I will have to manually bid?

Also, what are the academic requirements for a double major (i.e. Chemistry & Math) within the Science Faculty?

TIA!!

I'll answer the first question.

There is no such thing as "allocated" modules for Chemistry. All your core modules in the list stated on the website, have to be bidded for even in Year 1. It is more of a formality actually. as you normally only had to spent 1 point each for each core module. From year 2 onwards is when there are "competitions", where for certain modules, the number of bidders is more than the quota (for whatever reason there is).

But the online registration period is over as the deadline was yesterday. But I guess that there will be another registration period for another batch of applicants with late offers. Not too sure.
.

Hey I called the Science Faculty... The registration has been extended till 18 May.... I got my invitation together with my acceptance package (in the mail).. Its among one of the many many many papers in there!!!

I also got the email this morning informing me to register by 18 may with a link ...

https://neon.science.nus.edu.sg/intranet/public/openhouse/index.html

they also said that they will send me more info nearer the event date....

incl : academic talks and engaging activities...

Hi there,

Life Science timetable can be flexible depending on how you arrange it.

Our labs are fortnightly since we will be divided into groups again. And yes, due to that, I go to school 3 times every fortnight (most labs happened to be on Mondays and Fridays).

Our preallocated modules will be either CM1401, LSM1101 and LSM1102 or CM1401, LSM1101 and LSM1102. But you are allowed to request our department to assign you to switch to another group (usually because of timetable clashes) or to take more cores per semester with valid reasons. The modules will be preallocated to us when bidding begins.

During semester 1, we can choose our lab slots. But it goes on a first-come-first-serve basis. We have to select our desired lab slots through IVLE (not through CORS tutorial balloting) at a designated time. But for sem 2, we don't have much choice in picking our slots. In the case of clashes between lab slots and other science modules, we are allowed to appeal and change our slots.

As far as I recall, life science end latest at 6pm. (mostly due to the tutorial or field trips for LSM1103). Again, it is fortnightly. But after field trips, we are allowed to return home on our own so it can be quite convenient to go directly from Changi beach to Tampines instead of going all the way back to NUS. Class usually ends at 4pm for me (mostly because of my other non-LS modules). Depending on what modules you bid for, you can avoid all 8am classes and go back before 4pm. =D

Hope this helps. I was in the same shoes with twice as many questions last year. Hope to see you kids around soon. =)

Does that mean that from sem 2 our timetable becomes less flexible?!?! hahaha... Im heartened to know that fortnightly at least a 3 day school week is possible :) hehehe :D:D

you mentioned that labs are once a fortnight... what about lectures and tutorials? also the same?

and your answers were VERY helpful! really appreciate you answering all our questions! hahahhah

i stil have a few more questions! hahahahah I was wondering, in order to get decent results like say B+ - A-... would you say i would have to mug like a levels? because I have heard that the stress is supposed to be drastically reduced... everyone always said JC are the worse years of your life... any truth in that?

and is it harder if my double major was outside the science fac?

Thank you so much!:)

Thks!! Yupps, better test the waters lest we drown in schoolwork and reports, LOL :D

And ya, I'm a Returning NSman, and had already applied for NUS Science 2 yrs back (in 2009). I did my online confirmation of course last Dec, and that was all I've heard from NUS Science since.... :(

Btw, do we need to register for the Open House (since you've mentioned about some registration period in your quite), and many thks for the info reg. the Open House!! :)

Did you receive another email from FOS? I received an email from them about the Open House.. Registration period extended, so you should be receiving it with a link to register.. I've already registered for it a long time ago.

FOS seniors, I have a question. Does the Open House include the lab tours to get a feel of how the lab sessions are like?

Look up the requirements for second major. Double majoring in LS and Chem can spell disaster during timetable management because both majors have extremely long labs session and it may quite taxing. But there are people doing it (know of 2 year 3 students). If CM1401 (LS core) doesn't kill you during sem 1, then by all means, go ahead.

Only 2???!! Wow, so few.. Hmmm yeah thanks for your advice; I will try out the CM1401 to see how I am managing..

I think I can only answer the first part. Well I dunno abt nus but my friend managed to sneak another friend into not of the ntu ones, so I'm guessing nus wun be so harsh? Haha. But that other friend got her offer a few days after that lol.

I dun think u have to accept it first, they should be inviting people who are offered, not just those who have accepted. So it'll be a good chance for u too see the faculty first n learn more abt it to make a more informed decision, i think that's what open house is abt isn't it? :D

thanks pooohbear! haha! oh okay actually i wanna noe more abt quantitative finance and statistics. i heard frm my fren who's majoring in applied maths, that QF is very competitive, and the quota is quite small. and she said only a couple of singaporeans get in, QF is dominated by prcs.

Haha nah, still waiting for offer. Oh then u should just go whether u get invited or not, so that u can ask 1st before making a decision. Try to tag along a friend! :)

Anws I heard that u can still change the course n sch that u accept after accepting, just like revision of courses when we 1st applied, but I think it's still better to find out what u need to now instead of keep changing ur decision la :) hope the open house is useful for u! :)

i just hope not to do research career nxt time..had a bad experience frm my attachment last time. so i'm thinking of QF or stats,so can venture into finance sector, work as actuary or in banks..if you're interested in chem, food science may be worth considering too! i think food science is v interesting, but then i heard the job scope is really pretty much specialised!

Oh hmm I hvn really thought abt what to specialize for chem actually, was thinking abt medicinal chemistry but hvn given really serious thought abt it. But oops I'm kinda thinking abt the research pathway though I've never tried it before. And ya food science sounds fun! :D Though I heard there's only a very small group allowed each yr, dun really know abt it being very specialized. Haha I just hope I dun grow fat if I were to really do food science as a career, like u know how good cooks n well-known chefs are usually bigger in size?

Finance n working in the bank sounds good! :) just that I think for now I have chem as my interest, thought I'd give it a try. :)

haha! ohman you're really funny!:D dun think food science career requires to be a gourmet or sth! lol! yep the intake is v small, cohort size is 50 every year. have to file for a separate application after you accept FOS. the specialised job scope part i heard it frm my fren who graduated frm life sci..but shall check it out during the open hse. hope they dun give generic answers..

or so you like chem alot ah? did you include like chem engineering or sth in your choice?

anyway just asking huh, you chose med and dentistry for interest or prospects?

Hahaha cos u addressed me bro 1st! I'm a girl but u're a guy what, so why cnt call u bro! :D

Heh medicine is interest :) childhood dream haha. Dentistry is also interest but less, cos I once swore I'm never gonna become a dentist after going thru the braces period, but putting braces really helped me so ya!

I like chem yes! No I dint put chem engineering. Thought I just choose one, since likely to get into the one I put in front of the other. N I took bio in As so ya.

Oh thank u for helping me ask abt food science! :) but my friend who went for the nus open house, the one after results day, said that the person told her we can only choose to specialize after 1 or 2 years (cnt rmb), hmm not sure also. But ya put ur qns as priority, the rest can ask if u rmb on that day, can probably help other people who are interested also!

LOL cause i didnt noe you're a girl at first! but shud have expected it since you're matriculating this yr! ohwell..

haha well hw abt NTU tcm course! medicine also, primitive and traditional one though! i tink dentists are awesome..helping ppl to perfect their smiles! haha i wore braces before too! but i dun get how they diminish your interest to become a dentist?! how does putting braces help you? attract more guys? LOL:p

lol bio student! me too..BCME..haha. sure man, since anyway i wanted to noe more abt food science too! hmm to as wad i noe right..i heard frm a couple of my frens who're currently undergraduates in science..you can choose your major before you bid for your modules in yr 1. so means yr 1 you can choose your major alr. those majors like life sci, maths, physics, chem, food sci (must apply separately after accepting FOS)..but for certain majors like quantatitive finance, think you can only major in it in second year. i think they will look at your CAP at the end of year 1 and possibly interviews for those CAP not so high one etc..

you're also allowed to switch your major within the first two years..but at the risk of sacrificing 1 year..cause you might not be able to clear your core mods in time unless you overload. say for instance, you wanna switch from maths to life sci..

haha aiya but if you get into med, you wun need all these info alr!

Oh okay, that's very informative thanks a lot! :)

Hahaha attract guys! Cos at first putting braces is really painful, n even before I put braces I hate going to the dentist cos they always seem to be doing something nasty to ur teeth with those big drills n stuff. But I used to have hidden teeth between my front teeth, so they made this really big gap between my front teeth n it got me to have low confidence. So ya though it's cliche the main reason I wanted to become I dentist is to help ppl get beautiful smiles :)

Oh then what's ur choice for NTU? Math n econs? Heh I applied to NTU in the earlier round in dec last yr so a bit anyhow choose also. Tcm was one of my choices but my 1st was chem n I got it. Dint expect such good results, thought I screwed up heh. So right now u're still interested in chem/bio/finance/stats related courses? :)

Yup now I smile so widely until my friend freaks out sometimes HAHA! But erm I dun miss visits to the dentist at all... Heyyys,

the FoS Open House, from my experience last yr, is pretty much a 'get to know your course better' Open House.

There'll be informative seminars running in the LTs on the Programmes that FoS has to offer its would-be students (IMO 'promotional', if you're unsure). Booths will also be set up by the various Depts/Special Programmes outside the LTs to let you better understand the courses/programmes they are offering for FoS students.

As for whether to accept the FoS offer before registering, I dun think you'll have to accept the offer before signing up for the Open House, as the Open Hse registration website just requires you to drop your Registration No./NRIC, IMO for accounting purposes. As long as your friends dun mind giving their NRIC/Registration No. to the FoS ppl, there shouldn't be too much of a problem for them to 'crash' the Open Hse :D

Hope that helps!! :)

Year 2 preallocated cores: LSM2101 and LSM2102 for one sem and LSM2103 and ST1232 in the other sem.

Year 2 self-bidding modules: choose one from LSM2201A/LSM2202A/LSM2203
(everyone has labs per every 2-3 weeks on wednesdays till 6pm).
AND LSM2241/LSM2251

If you wish to take research modules (LSM2288/2289) there is no lecture/tutorials, but you have to commit around 16-20 hours of labwork and report writing. Do take this modules if you are interested in going into research. Meet up with professor for taking the modules. No bidding.

It is up to you to bid for whichever you want to take. Note that among the 3 experimental modules, some are easy. As long as you finished your experiments, you are free to leave. (My record was 1.5 hours for one LSM experiment =D) For LSM2101, LSM2102, LSM2103 and ST1232, there are NO LABS at all XD

Lectures are weekly but attendance is not compulsory. It is ok to arrive late and leave early (common situation) or not to attend at all. For tutorials, it depends on your lecturers and tutors. Some are fortnightly (LSM1101), others end early (LSM1104). Those tutorials held in lecture halls are optional while those in labs account for your attendance.

Our results are based on a "bell-curve". B is the average score. But let's say 70% your entire cohort score 28/30. Even if you score 28/30 (which is close to full marks, you will still get a measly B. To do well, you should try to score as much as possible during continual assessments(CAs) (sort of like monthly tests) and at the same time, do well for finals. Memorise, understand, regurgitate...That's how LS works :D At least there is no killer gp.

Taking a double major from different faculties has its pros and cons. Eg:
PROS: Not that many labs.
CONS: Clashes are troublesome. (our faculty helps out if for clashes within the same faculty).

hi there,

does anyone from life science know how we would get our level 2000 allocated mods? how do we know if we're getting lsm2101 and lsm2102, or st1232 and lsm2103? is it randomized? because i'd like to know earlier if possible... thanks a lot!

Hmm. According to what i know, 2101, 2102, and 2103 are essential (compulsory) modules in level 2000.

1232 statistics is a level 1000 module, which seems to be compulsory as well.

I'm not a life science student though. Wasn't offered science either but I might try to appeal in. Maybe you want to confirm with someone else. :)

Heyyys,

the FoS Open House, from my experience last yr, is pretty much a 'get to know your course better' Open House.

oh okay i see! thanks alot! you accepted FOS alr?

Stay strong, for time flies in the Army :) I wished i had the stay-out life, but well, we're beyond that :)

I'm a 'confirmed' chemistry major (can't intend as I've sold my 1st 4 years after graduation to MOE on a teaching scholarship) as MOE has already assigned me Chemistry as my main teaching subject on graduation from NIE :S

If molecules and atoms are part of you, do consider Food Science (strong backing in Organic Chem. recommended). IMO, food science is more 'fun' and 'interesting' than stats (I didnt really have a thing for numbers back in school), unless you've a thing for endless matrics of numbers and variables of the (i dunno what) kind :D

I was a CQMS in one of the Army MT Lines back then, and I gotta agree with u that Army life is srsly stagnant and slow... What abt u? :)

I was awarded the Teaching Scholarship (Local), and that's the more 'prestigious' one compared to the Teaching Award (though both are nowhere near the ones awarded by PSC X.X)

Since you've also mentioned that you're looking at working in the biz/finance-related sectors, do consider Quantitative Finance in NUS. There's also a Double Maj. Prog in Maths & Econs in NTU that you can consider as well (one of my juniors who is intending to work in the finance-related sector is currently in that course). Appealing to NBS btw?

Know ur feel bro. Support = No Life, haiz....

Teaching, to me, is more of a stepping stone than a job per se. I'm looking at moving up the education sector during/after my bond with MOE's up. As for venturing into other fields, time will probably tell, hehe.

I'm an A/B Hybrid, AABB-AB (H2 Math, Chem, Bio, Econs - PW, GP). How abt u? :)

As for the Dbl Maj that NTU offered, that was based off what my junior told me when she was deciding whether to go NUS FASS or NTU SPMS last yr. Can't really provide much more info off hand, but I can check with my junior once her exams are over :D

Consider it 'second nature' ba :) It's the 'ideal' course for anyone looking to enter biz-related areas on graduation, and given that you're appealing to NTU, it has to be NBS :D

The scholarship is not that hard to get, but IMO the MOE execs are gonna have one heck of a time sifting for 'more suitable canidates' given the UK TS(O) joker caught with kiddy porn last yr, as well as other random cases of MOE TS holders misbehaving in their Unis. There're tests, but their purpose is prolly to ensure that you're 'okay enough' to be interviewed :D

The scholarships are probably MOE's recruitment drive, sweetened and tuned for aspiring teachers to 'sign up' with them :)

Chemistry, runs in my family's genes. Daddy's a businessman dealing in chemicals, mommy's a laboratory manager, and as for the kids.... yepss.

As for choice of what to major in, MOE decides based on your results (they take the best 2 performing subjects from your O & A Levels) and assign them as your CS1 & CS2 respectively). You may be able to requst for a change during the interview (I didnt exercise that as I was at home with what MOE assigned me then).

By e way, are there any differences btwn NBS & NUS Biz?? Cz I was wondering if you'd also appeal to NUS Biz as well :)

oh i see. i alw thought you can choose your own major so long it is a teaching subject. haha but you have to go for another yr of NIE after your course in NUS right?

hmm actually i think NBS and NUS biz more or less similar? maybe the specialisation part is different..NBS got 6 specialisations for you too choose frm..NUS nt that sure. and NBS is a 3 yr programme while NUS is 4..NUS biz is rlly hard to get in..

oh and im afraid my appeal may be a futile one. since i'm matriculating next year right..so by right NBS has to reserve places for the girls who graduate frm poly or JC next year. the places for guys may have already been taken up more or less, since most of the guys applied for the course last year after they received their results. so unless the one of the guys decide to change course or wad..i'm afraid it's kinda hard to get in? you get wad i mean?

NIE, is probably the best 'job hazard' out there :) An extra yr of school sure beats entering the workforce on graduation :)

I get ur pt on appealing at the last moment, but I feel tt u shldnt be too fixated on the quotas (and hence vacancies) that NBS may have set for the 2012 intake. NBS may have reserved some seats for the 2012 intake for the 2011 A-level gals, but I'm quite certain they wun be so rigid to the extent that they wld deny an able student a place because of 'vacancy concerns'.

As long as you can demonstrate to them that you're willing and serious about this whole business (sry for e pun), I'm more than certain they'll be more than happy to admit u in :)

Have faith :)

We get it during CORS bidding after major declaration. Grouping is randomized. But you can if you have gotten a group with an unfavourable timetable, you are free to appeal to our department to change groups (subjected to availability). There are successful past year appeals in my seniors cohort.

I would like to ask if anyone of you have accepted NUS offer into FoS and mailed the 'P form' already? They said to check after 3 weeks to see if NUS have received them after you have mailed the form. As long as I mail the form before 1st June should be alright right?:o

As long as the office gets it before 1st June. During my batch, some of my friends handed the form directly to the office 2 days short of the deadline. XD

Hi helly,

For the 'P' Form Passport photo, you can take the passport photo anywhere you want, and just affix the photo to the form. I can't really advise on whether you can take the photos yourself and bring it to the booths to print (although the booths have the facility to print passport photos). If the booths allow you to print the passport photos, it should be okay (though you'll have to cut out the photo yourself) :)

Now I get it, guess I do not have the form because I'll be matriculating in year 2013, but they will send one when the time comes, right?:D

You'll get the form in Nov/Dec 2012, when NUS sends you another brown envelope containing information on confirmation of the course you will accept this year.

No worries :)

Yeah, I have paid $7 for taking a photo at the self-service photo booth and sent out the completed Form P last Thurs! Hahax..

Yes it's possible, the only thing is that you need to find a suitable whitish background to take a photo of yourself. Also need to know the correct dimensions for the passport size. Cannot be squared.. And smile a bit please! Cannot be stony-looking. :D

Hi Andyarien,

may I know if there is much focus on analytical chem involved and is the minor in Forensic Sci under chem recognised?

Will NTU CBC has more focus on these area?( since they are more towards Biological Chem)

Please advise!

Thanks! :)

I would say there is not much focus in analytical chem in this course. There is a compulsory module in year 2 and another optional module in year 3 and 4, and basically that's it. I'm not sure whether the forensic science minor is recognised or not, but I guess it would be advantages if you are planning to work in this field? One of the modules (GEK1542) needed to fulfill this minor is very competitive though, and normally it can reach a high number of points such that you have to accumulate your points for a few sems before you can think about bidding for it. I'd say NTU probably have more focus on these areas, and if i recall what a friend of mine told me previously, forensic science is like one of the core modules for their course.

Unfortunately, NUS don't have such accelerated programmes. The only way for you to graduate within 3 years is to overload each semester and that could be taxing.

Is anyone going to do physics??
I got a call from a Prof from NTU, to reconsider my decision to choose NUS. Anyone any opinion??:D

WAHH. you mean the NTU prof called you just to ask you to reconsider about choosing NUS? you must be real good in physics! :D

I dun think its particularly fair for Pros to call to 'buy sway votes' or 're-inform the elecorate of their benefits'.

But oh well, if NUS can pull off faculty Open Hses last Sat, I cant see why NTU shouldnt pull off something similar by getting pros to get students to reconsider :p

Heyys,

Hope to c u at SCAMP ;)

Dun recall seeing any free shuttle to nus, though their internal shuttle's free, lol.

If you're staying near the nus law faculty in bt timah, u can take the BTC shuttle frm there to Kent Ridge, and transfer to the internal shuttle bus.

I'm intending to major in Chemistry :) U?

within kent ridge campus, yes there are a few internal shuttle buses (aka ISB). there is also one ISB between kent ridge campus and bukit timah campus - BTC1 (pls correct me if i'm wrong).

but there are no shuttle buses from outside KR campus, i.e. if you are looking for such buses from Buona Vista MRT to KR campus.. NUS is accessible from outside via SBS buses No 95, 96 and 151. And the brand new Kent Ridge MRT is coming our way! YAY! there are also some more buses along AYE (for FOS, FoD, YLLSoM students), Pasir Panjang Rd (for Biz & Computing students) and Clementi Rd (for SDE, FASS & FoE students). Hope I did not miss any schools out.

SCAMP - More 'close' than FOC as it's on a sign-up basis. Prolly for the willing to knw more ppl, and you'll also form stronger bonds btwn ur camp mates :p FOC is faculty lvl, and I dun think you'll be particularly close with ppl from other OGs as there're simply too many ppl ^.^

Btw, I seriously need a SOCIAL LIFE after like... almost spending 2 decades living in a shell? hahas :D

Sci Open Hse, IMO, is to buy 'sway votes' and/or 'convince the reluctant'. I went there for info reg. their exchange progs and SPS, and apart frm that, nothing much really... Zzzz....

The sad thing is, none of my close friends are in Science. They are in engineering etc. So I'm worried I'll be a lost sheep in the camp on the first day. Haha!

I wonder if the camp activities are gonna be wild :(, I cannot stay under the sun, like half an hour I'll be badly burnt -.- Applying sunblock is futile:mad:
I'm just worried for this part of the camp, where I'm required to be under the sun most of the time.

Yea, I want to expand my social circle too. I find the Science Open House to be quite a waste of time.

I came back home from my compulsory JC orientation camp with a red and peeling face. I couldn't head out of my house 'cos it scared the daylights of anyone who saw my face. I was down with a high fever and even had to see a doctor. That's how bad my sunburn is normally. :(

I didn't enjoy myself, I was in pain. I know it's once in a lifetime experience so I'm gonna consider carefully.

hey! haha i think this post of mine was quite long ago right! cause i read up abit on it and i went for the science open house too! now i noe that you can only choose to major in it in 2nd yr and selection is quite stringent. my fren who's currently doing maths now told me in order to secure a placing in QF, nid at least 4.7 CAP! dno true or not! she also said QF is dominated by prcs..

lols i'm appealing for ntu accountancy..but if my appeal fail, i think food science or statistics are quite a good major! but it's interest/fun versus practicality/prospects..so i dunno!

I have to agree! :( I went in with full excitement and was expecting to get even more information from FOS Open House than NUS Open House last March (I didn't attend though - I believed that the information from Open House would be too general). But most of the information during 9am-10.45am talks were found in the FOS website already.. Very redundant. Furthermore, the same information was already repeated across a few talks! SEP in early morning talk and another in SEP talk.. but at least I got to see the interesting statistics such as the enrollment rate for the past 10 yrs, no. of freshmen in different majors (LS being the largest and Computational Bio being the smallest). I didn't know that 2007 was the year that had the largest FOS cohort! Anyway, I was keen to go on a school tour as I wanted to have a quick feel of how advanced the labs were.

WOAH!Both???You enjoy camps so much?Hahaha, what's the difference between the 2 camps anyway?

you wanna venture into banking&finance nxt time issit? not considering quantitative finance at all ah? though i noe it's quite hard to get in..oh and are you appealing for acct or biz in NBS? biz is lower ranking, might have higher chance to appeal in.

yup cant decide btw food science and statistics. cause my relative who just graduated frm science told me that the job scope for food science is pretty specialised, hence restricted..haha.

SCAMP is more of a faculty-wide camp as you'll be able to interact with people from all the courses in Science. FOr SOW Camp, interaction is more limited to your OG, which I read are grouped based on ppl taking the same major as you.

SCAMP is prolly a camp by itself, but SOW is more of an 'initiation' into Uni life. There will be module bidding during SOW (with seniors heping you out), as well as the NUS Rag & Flag which happens near the end of SOW :)

if u're A-level holder and got admitted to FOS, you can choose any major within FOS except a few majors, such as FST and Pharmacy.. which requires H2 Bio.. More info on the prerequisites for majors at http://science.nus.edu.sg/undergraduates/prospective/prereq.html.

for poly graduates, they can only apply for the majors that are related to their diploma course.. for eg, those with dip. in life sciences can only choose life sciences or chemistry majors.

Yes, for labs, wearing lab coats is compulsory as we will be handling dangerous chemicals and microorganisms at university level.. after all, you don't want chemicals to damage your favourite clothes. for goggles, it's optional.. yr instructor will tell you when to wear or not. i read from other forums that they are provided at no charge (because you are paying the miscellaneous fees each year). you don't need to bring any other equipment into labs because everything can be found in labs itself. FYI, rubber gloves are also provided at no charge..

Hey all,
I'm so glad to see this page where most discussions are between NUS FoS and NTU SPMS!:) I've been offered NUS Science as well as NTU math and econs! I'm thinking of majoring in either Applied mathematics or stats (relatively more inclined towards stats) in NUS but I like both courses equally cos it seems like NTU course provides a more varied job prospects and I'm afraid that majoring in stats will be too specialized! I hope to go into the banking and finance industry in future:) but I can't seem to make a decision between these two:(

I hope to receive some comments and advice!

hi i was facing the same dilemma as you before too! was considering between nus applied math and ntu math and econs but i eventually accepted ntu math and econs.

i think both courses will allow you to enter the banking and finance industry in the future since they will train your logical thinking and quantitative skills which are what what employers in the industry are looking out for. a plus point for me abt ntu math and econs is that it's interdisciplinary and allows me to develop both my quantitative and qualitative skills. this may also translate to more varied job prospects that you mentioned.

maybe it's good to consider if you really like econs as well? cos that the main difference between nus applied math/stats and ntu math and econs and also the main reason why i chose ntu math and econs. i like econs and i like the modules that i get to take under the econs part of ntu math and econs. maybe you go take a look at the modules that you'll be taking for the two courses? and also ask yourself if you can imagine yourself studying and enjoying those modules. that's also how i made the decision :)

besides the course content, maybe you shld also consider the uni culture? i'm not sure about this but i feel that ntu is more homely and friendly and more heartland-y. this is the environment i kinda miss after being in a good sec sch and jc for 6 years.

other insignificant reasons that made me accept ntu's offer are also cos i got nanyang scholarship and cos my sis at ntu also haha.

if really still cannot make a decision, toss a coin and decide la hahaha! i'm not asking you to decide your future based on the outcome (quite stupid la, hor?) but the purpose of tossing the coin is cos you will suddenly know what you're hoping for.

haha hope this helps and update me where you go cos we may be coursemates! :D

haha. okay so you're a girl la! hmm ya really sad to say but im serving ns now, 9 more mth to go! not lucky la! ns isn't fun at all! rather just matriculate right after A level lor.

you wanna venture into banking&finance nxt time issit? not considering quantitative finance at all ah? though i noe it's quite hard to get in..oh and are you appealing for acct or biz in NBS? biz is lower ranking, might have higher chance to appeal in.

yup cant decide btw food science and statistics. cause my relative who just graduated frm science told me that the job scope for food science is pretty specialised, hence restricted..haha.

hmm did you take bio at O level? if you did, can apply! haha the course seems pretty fun right! like experiment with food..then during lab session hungry can just grab them and eat! jkjk..haha!

ya, banking and finance... i will choose QF if my results are good enough :) im appealing for acct, though i think i have Low chance of getting it -_-... just appeal lor, no harm trying... I din take bio at Olvl also..so ya.. that goes FST :( I DUN UNDERSTAND WHY THEY MAKE BIO AS A BASIC SUBJECT... IF THEY DIE DIE WANT A PREREQUISITE, CHEMISTRY SHOULD BE THE ONE LOR.. it's under applied chemistry and i heard that there is only one bio module thr. out.. !!!

Hello everyone! I'm here to promote Science's Freshmen Orientation Projects. As some of u might have already known, the website is www.nusscienceclub.com/fop.html. Thanks for all who have shared the links in the previous posts :)

Our theme this year is "Theatre Of Dreams", as we are promoting our projects as a set of movie productions. and no, we are not affiliated to Manchester United XD

In a nutshell, we have 5 separate projects under FOP, namely SCAMP, SOW, RAG, FLAG and D&D (Dinner and Dance). As of now, sign-ups are opened only for SCAMP (https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&authkey=CJbTvcUK&formkey=dFZvTEt4WmN4cHlqZTd3czBsdjZreGc6MQ#gid=0) and RAG (https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dElfMjZqNXhTU0x1TWRnRHVELXRCN1E6MQ#gid=0). You may want to sign up directly by clicking on the links or by visiting the website first.

Thanks :)

If you have any qns, u can ask me here (ps. I'm a life science major)...I'll do my best to periodically check this thread out. Do tell your friends who are coming over to Science abt FOP too!

Alternatively, if u want to be updated on opening of other sign-ups, u can "subscribe to updates" here (https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dGV4ZldxNlZrT1FSMXpFWHhmZVNOQWc6MQ#gid=0).

Hi firex! Wow, thanks for coming in! Because I am still clueless about the activities specific for FOS freshmen.

I'm interested in SOW'11 but what will we actually do there? I know it's stupid but is it a camp thingy? Or just a Week Zero orientation activity where we will interact with seniors in lectures and hang out in the school premises to get used to?

RAG looks fun, what's more, it's located at Marina Promontory.. I might attend as a helper. Sucks at dancing/performing lah. :)

I'm also looking forward to FLAG Day as I haven't done that for ages! LOL... Btw, is it an university-wide event or FOS-wide one?

Hi there! SOW is like a package: camp plus week zero activities. That's why it kinda spans over 2 weeks. You'll get to interact with seniors and fellow freshies who are usually of the same major.

Good to hear that you're interested in RAG :) Pretty fun to help out too.. and it's been a while since NUS carry out RAG outside the campus... and yes, FLAG Day is a uni-wide event.

Heyys,

nice to have you around :)

Just curious though, what's the diff btwn SCAMP and SOW?? Both seem to overlap each other a fair bit in terms of activities and idk, but seem really alike.

And ya, are RAG and FLAG ttogether, or separate events??

TIA :D

Halo! I think I saw u posting on the difference btw SCAMP and SOW a few pages back, and you were mostly right!

SCAMP is more of a social camp where u meet people from across Science faculty. SOW is camp plus orientation programme. For SOW's camp, u will meet ppl of the same majors while the orientation parts include stuff like introducing you guys to the CORS bidding system etc etc

I think SCAMP and SOW will be different. For a start, I think most of the games played are different too.

RAG and FLAG are separate events :)

Haha you're welcome!

You'll collect it in NUS on the day you go to NUS to complete your registration :p That registration will req u to submit ur tuition grant and release of liability forms, as well collect ur student card.

cant wait for that day!! :D

Hahaha, yeah! we are so excited to collect our brand new student card... but the student card itself looks rather simple with just orange bar on the top and the rest, entirely white with your photo and your personal particulars next to it. it feels like very corporate and non-fancy..

NTU one looks rather nice and casual... with big NTU logo and a curved red dash across the space..

Yeh, unless you PAY for the Tertiary student concession passes for the new ezlink card (50+ for buses and 40+ for trains i think). Without concessions, its still adult fare.

BLEAH...

Aniways, do u knw when application for the new ezlink card will start? :)

Hi!

There will be a Night Rider 2011! It's not part of the freshmen projects but rest assured, our sports comm are already preparing for a Night Rider :)

For those who are wondering, it's an annual night cycling event held after the FOP season, organised by the Science Club Sports Comm. usually, the groups from SOW and SCAMP would come tgt again for this event to have more fun :D

Certainly you can! As long as you have taken AND passed LSM1301 (General Biology - that's equivalent to H2 Bio) module, you can declare your major in LS at CORS website. You thinking of doing a LS major? Me too, taking a bio bridging module! Join me! :D

Yep, why else am I thinking of doing a life sci major if not for the relaxed bio requirement? Chem was my intended major but upon reading about life sci & its entry requirements, i decided to do life sci. Only Pharm & FST are very strict with H2 Bio requirement. Me too, don't even have O-level bio at all, all the way to now.

I'm not too sure but the lab portion of the LS modules should be fun.

According to the others, they said it's not necessary to read any bio notes because the majority who took LSM1301 did quite well and progressed to reading LS major in 2nd sem onwards. They even said, just enjoy your holidays till August. if you really have nothing to do, you might as well read up some bio notes frm yr friends.

the laptops that nus offer meet nus's requirements, so i guess any laptop that they offer should be fine for science.

Thank you to both of you :)

It will be depending on your preference.
For battery and weight, I would said Macbook or Fujitsu
For durability, maybe Lenovo..
For good specs and competitive price, maybe Acer

But all depends on year by year basis. The one I listed above might not be applicable this year, since all will be new. :)
Just take your time during the Matriculation Fair looking for the laptops

My money will go with the Lenovo Thinkpad for their reliability and performance. My dad's 3 year-old Lenovo Thinkpad is still going strong :)

Honestly, it really depends on what you're looking for in a laptop.

style - Macbooks, Sony VAIO
performance - Lenovo Thinkpad, Macbook Pro
weight - Fujitsu, Toshiba Satellite
durability - any business laptop will do
battery life - laptops with smaller screens will fare better, but it depends on usage ultimately

If price is one of your considering factors, you may want to get your laptop from any of the PC shows (there's one this week), cuz the laptops that NUS offer will set you back by at least 2k. The NUS laptops have very good specs for their price, but whether you'll need all that performance is another issue altogether.

happy shopping :)

Not all. Most of the laptops (esp. lenovo, apple, fujitsu) will cost 2k/2k plus. There are a couple of models that are under 2k, but their specs will pale to those that are 2k and above.

Ah shoot, I almost forgot that NUS has an interest-free computer loan that's up to 2k (for undergrads like us).
http://www.nus.edu.sg/comcen/notebook/purchase/interestloan.html

Idk which models will be selling for under 2k this yr, but it seems that we'll have to wait till july when nus has confirmed the models they'll be offering this yr.

hi it's me again!!!

Sorry for being MIA these few days.... For laptops, the ones sold at Matric Fair are not bad deals, with many software packaged in which makes the deal worthwhile.

If you're worried about Acer laptop, I've been using one and it has been heavily tortured by Photoshop and Premiere and After Effects for 2 years and it's still working well. I guess it boils down to luck (maybe those unlucky ones got the faulty units from the start) and how well u take care of your lappie.

Personally, I prefer those deals at IT Fair (going on right now) and those sold after IT Fair (cos they are usually remnant units, so they will sell at cutthroat prices). If you are someone who wants good specifications and price, I'm pretty sure u can find models with 2nd gen Core i5 processors with maybe AMD 6550 graphics for under $1000. If you are just using it for light work and casual gaming and surfing, you might want to consider lightweight laptops coming soon after the month of June. Those laptops are powered by AMD's Llano processors, which should offer decent battery life and graphics (and good prices too). Many choices for us this year. Don't think they will offer this at matric fair....

If you are thinking if you should get a lappie in the first place, I guess it's all about convenience. With a laptop around, u can do your lab reports, projects, look through lecture slides, google, wiki almost any time you want. There are also many spots around the sch with power points, and there's wireless connection almost everywhere in nus.

As for the SCAMP briefing details, an email has already been sent out :):) Hope you have received it! If not, maybe it's in your junk mail?

i'm seeing more students using macbook and macbook pros, so yep...i think they still get the job done - as long as u have powerpoint, word etc etc

in fact, if i am not into designing stuffs on my laptop, i feel compelled to get lightweight-and-good-bat-life laptops like the upcoming Asus line and macbook air, since they are already powerful enough for everyday stuff. lightweight cos they won't tire u out and good bat life cos u wont worry much about looking for sockets which are not in use.

School will officially start on 8 of August, but if I am not wrong it is considered as a holiday in NUS for Rag Day.. Then the next day is National Day, so you will start school on 10 of August..

For this year, there is a special case. The Rag Day will be brought out of NUS to Marina Bay on 9 August. Hence, classes that falls on 8 and 10 August (Monday and Wednesday) will be cancelled to ensure participants have "ample preparation time and do not suffer from excess fatigue." Classes will only then start on Thursday 11 August.

urm hi all, i have a few questions to ask. i know they sound dumb, but i'm really confused about uni :/

do we sign up for orientation ourselves? i heard from my friend that there are limited vacancies. Does that mean that if i sign up too late, there will not be space and i don't get to attend any orientation camp at all?

what are the differences between the camps? i heard that the 26july to 5august is for orientation, but if vacancies are limited and i do not get selected for the SOW, then what do i do during that period of time?

my friend got into environmental studies and intend to branch towards environmental biology. so can she attend SOW? or is there any other camp for her from environmental studies?

thanks a lot :S

Hello! I think the orientation segment that u are referring to is the matric fair, freshmen inauguration ceremony etc. All these are not enough for a thorough orientation experience so I highly recommend u to sign up for SOW! SOW will be like a package covering both camp and orientation parts so u will be going thru the whole process with friends, new and old.

Seniors, I need to ask you something.. I read from FoS website that the recommended workload per semester is 20 MCs, equivalent to 5 modules per semester. How true is it, based on your actual experience? 5 modules per sem is not too taxing, right? In terms of a timetable, what do 5 modules roughly translate into? Say, typically Mon-Fri from 9am to 3pm??

No, it is not too taxing. I'd say, it's just right and a norm for most students.

As you may already know, the time table is not fix. But for most modules in FoS, there are two lecture slots per week (i.e. 2 hrs x 2). On top of that, there will also be tutorials + practicals which may vary module-to-module. Modules from other faculties like FASS may only have 2hrs x 1 lecture per week. So, a certain day, you may have 8am-12pm day but the next day, you may have lessons only from 2-6pm. Or the worse case is, 8am to 6pm days, where your core modules are from 8am to 10am and 4pm to 6pm and there is no choice not to take them. When that happens, you'll have a long break in between. That happens to me once and I had to insert another module in between to kill the boredom. lol.

So, it really depends on the modules you choose and luck. If you're lucky enough and choose modules wisely, you may also end up with a free day! Hope that helps. :)

Haseyo
07-03-2011, 11:24 PM
andyarien: Thank you for your kind explanation! Okay I get a good idea of what our timetables will be like. That's because I don't know whether 5-modules per sem is reasonable or not, but now I do. Thanks!

I have a question.. theres now a new mod? PC1421 also known as physics for life sciences. But i can't seem to find any details about it. And then there's PC1326 (also physics for life sciences). Anyone has any idea?

Congrats on completing your first year! You're a senior now! haha.

You can view the info from CORS. https://aces01.nus.edu.sg/cors/jsp/report/ModuleInfoListing.jsp It seems there are two modules with similar sounding names - PC1421 (Physics FOR Life Sciences) and PC1326/GEK1521 (Physics IN THE Life Sciences). The prerequisite for the former is Life Science majors with at least O-Level Physics while the latter can be taken by anyone except for Physics majors. Hope that helps.

Hello! am just wondering, for freshies there are pre-allocated modules right, are the lecture/tutorial grps for these pre-allocated modules fixed? (as in we can't change it?) Also, we can only know our grps when we are able to log into cors right?

oh 1 more qns, is it possible to take accounting modules or finance/business modules as breadth or UE if i'm from FOS?

hello! yes, lecture groups are usually fixed. you can ballot for tutorial slots though ;)

yes, you can check through cors or through ivle. however, we usually know the groups near bidding period. so you have to plan your timetable first! ^^

if you're from FOS, anything out of science can be your breadth. any modules can be counted towards UE ^^

Life Science sophomore here. Not sure whether it stands true for the other majors. But for LS, our lecture slots are fixed whereas tutorial groups are not. Some requires additional signup for your preferred time while some are assigned to you. Anyway, you won't need it till week 3 (when tutorial and lab sessions begin). If there are clashes, you are allowed to appeal to your department to request a permanent or temporary change.

Yes. It is considered as breadth first until you cleared your breadth requirement.

Yes. A module for analysing and comparing shampoo.

Thanks but I can't remember if I bidded using P or G account! :(

By the way, which experimental mods will you be taking? I can't decide between ecology and bioinformatics. Any advice?

Thanks lol and lishanshung for your replies!
hmm, with regards to timetable planning, it means that i have to plan the modules which are not pre-allocated first, then add in those that are pre-allocated when i know which lecture grp i'm in right?

ohoh, 1 more qns, under the archives section in cors, under bidding summary, there is a heading for the column called "faculty"..... so for eg. for PL1101E, if it only states Arts n Social Science under "faculty" tt means only those from FASS can bid? then what about other students from other facs? (sry if the qns sounds dumb)

Well, it's best if you plan the timetable with your pre-allocated modules. Also, remember to check out the timings for labs! Put everything in even if you don't know which lecture group you're in. Just try to have as many timetables that can fit every thing. ;)

For your second question, yes that's correct. You will have to wait until the next bidding round when you can bid. First few rounds are usually reserved for the faculty's students.

Thanks lol! tt was very helpful :)
just to clarify, in the bidding archive (2010 sem1), for LAK1201,round 1c, 2a, only offer to FASS ppl, from round 2b, there's no more LAK1201, so tt means all places are taken up. (correct me if i am wrong). so tt means freshies from other facs cannot bid for it in sem 1 right?

then isin't it quite difficult to plan your timetable cos u can never know when the mod u want is not available for u to bid?:(

An email consists of our User ID and Password for Pre-Reg system will be sent to us by the second week of July, which is at the week of 11 July.

ps. You may refer to the Registration Guide (https://share.nus.edu.sg/registrar/info/info/Registration-Guide-for-Undergraduate-Students.pdf) for more information.

I might be taking LSM2202A if I can't take LSM2203 since I exhausted my P points for Anatomy. I think PR is from our P account. LSM2203 is like a godsend. Interesting experiments, lectures and easy to score. Likewise, expensive. Then again, why save points when we can get LSM level 3000 and 4000 modules at 1 pt respectively? Take LSM2201A only if you have a death wish or you are superb in biochem.

Content-wise, ecology is more interesting with the field trips. Lots of memorization. No choosing group mates. Self-planned field trips. Dreary essays. Heavy exam work. Take this to avoid computer work. BIO students take this.

Bioinfo = computing work. Working with computers alot. Get to choose your own group mates. Killer assignments. Might be time-consuming. Useful module. Open book finals. Webcast available. Good for those venturing into research. Suitable for BMS or MCB. Take this to avoid ecology.

@lol which module do you have in mind? I might be taking Bioinfo since I wish to work in research field and possibly venture into BMS.

you're welcome :D

usually it's best to plan a few timetables with different mods as back ups. that would be safer rather than having only one timetable since you will be panicking if you can't get the modules that you want and time for bidding is ticking!

don't worry. i was quite worried during my first semester too! yes, bidding starts on the 27th of july. i don't quite understand what you mean by "book". usually you will have a few allocated core modules. then you try to fit in a few more modules that you would like to take. of course, there's always a chance that you can't get what you want. so prepare a few modules as back up beforehand. :)

yeah i can't really make up my mind between lsm2202a and lsm2203 too! 2203 seems much easier but 2202a is quite interesting as well.:(

i am going to venture into BMS but from what i heard, bioinformatics is really tough. but i am not comfortable with ecology either. this is so confusing. :(

Did all of you receive email from FoS regarding the welcome tea ceremony next two weeks later? It mentioned that it will start from 8.50am to 4.30pm.. I had a feeling that it would be just another Open House thingy... which I'm already sian.. Because I'm more interested in CORS bidding and timetable which I hope the welcome tea session would touch on.

All the info you need regarding ULRs, faculty requirements, major/second major/minor requirements and application procedures if any, module-specific timetables and CORS bidding guides are available on NUS's website. The only minor inconvenience is that they are scattered all over the various departmental websites and you really have to dig up everything slowly.

For starters, there is even a video of a CORS briefing, accompanied by slides, which you can view here: http://vidcast.nus.edu.sg/camtasiarelay/CORS_Briefing_-_Flash_%28Large%29_-_20100702_04.44.17PM.html. Webcasts like this one will quickly become your best friends in the months to come.. haha. Although this is from last year, the contents of the briefing remain largely relevant.

A lot of information will no longer be spoonfed all the time, especially if it is available for viewing on their publicly-accessible website.

Any non-life-science students taking LSM1301 General Biology here? Is it difficult to score because the number of bidders and lowest biddings are rather low.

Oh i took before! I'm from Arts and took this module as Breadth. Erm, actually i think the cohort is rather large, since there's 2 lecture groups and the one i'm in usually packed the LT.

You can read reviews of the module here: http://module-review.com/lsm1301-general-biology-5392/

My opinion is largely similar to toinhlt's, but i think the workload is not really 'light', more of 'moderate'. Although it's open-book MCQ final exam, I don't think it's super easy as you still need to know your stuff when answering application-based qns. Some are straight from lecture notes so it'll be helpful if you tag your notes/TB beforehand. Pace of lectures is quite fast, impossible to process all the info so you need to read up afterwards. Because of the large cohort, need to beware of bell curve, so it's not that easy to score.. Had to search the internet for answers to some lab assignments, but even then, smt you can't find the answers and have to make an intelligent guess. Need to be careful and check your answers for lab assignments as half a mark can mean alot of difference in grades. Recommended TB is not compulsory.

Thanks a lot for the prompt reply ! By the way, I wonder if anyone gets pre-allocated CM1191 in Semester 2? I already planned my timetable with 6 modules, just to find out I will also be pre-allocated with another module CM 1191 either in Semester 1 or Semester 2. Sianz.

P/S : What is TB by the way? Sorry for my ignorance :P
