Mod edited to include links and introduction.
This is the official thread for ST Engineering scholarships for the 2009 - 2010 cycle. Discuss here if you have something to share, or want to know more.

More information can be found here (http://student.brightsparks.com.sg/profile/steng/index.html?).
Last year's thread can be found here (http://forum.brightsparks.com.sg/showthread.php?t=4633).

Anyone has any idea what PEARL score as requested in the application form is?

Thanks, i googled with lead that it has something to do with CCA. Turns out, its sort of a grading system of CCA stuff like you said, except its for JC. This system has been abolished by MOE quite a while ago and is no longer relevant. Guess i'll leave the section blank.

Once again, thank you for your help.

Anyone know how the defence science organisation(DSO), defence science and technology agency(DSTA), ST engineering relate to each other, they all do engineering work don't they? how do they differ?

Most obvious difference: ST Engineering is a private company. DSO and DSTA both fall under the MinDef. Thus, DSO and DSTA focus on defence technology, while ST Engineering doesn't.

ST Engineering (http://www.stengg.com/aboutus/corporate_profile.aspx) is a private company:Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) is an integrated engineering group specialising in innovative solutions and services in the aerospace, electronics, land systems and marine sectors.

Incorporated in 1997 and headquartered in Singapore, we rank among the largest companies listed on the Singapore Exchange, and one of Asia’s largest defence and engineering groups.

DSTA (http://www.dsta.gov.sg/) is under MinDef:The Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) is a statutory board set up under the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF). It is responsible for implementing defence technology plans, acquiring defence material and developing defence infrastructure for MINDEF.

DSTA aims to provide leading-edge technological solutions to the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) so that it continues to be a formidable fighting force for the defence and security of Singapore. To do so, DSTA will tap the best technologies - military and commercial - and foster an environment of creativity and innovation for defence applications.

DSO (http://www.dso.org.sg/aboutus.aspx) is under DSTA and focuses on R&D: Our story began more than three decades ago. From a mere three-member team, we've evolved into a premier R&D institution, with more than 1,000 research scientists and engineers, who work seamlessly across disciplines to build strategic capabilities for Singapore in the domains of air, land, sea and cyberspace.

As Singapore's national defence R&D organisation, DSO National Laboratories creates the critical edge in defence technology to force multiply the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) combat capabilities and render potential threats irrelevant.

I think that means that DSO creates the technology, while DSTA implements the technology.

Thanks, as such, I believe ST engineering does engineering work and its products are used locally and sold overseas as well. DSTA and DSO does so as well but the products are solely reserved for the SAF, a step above ST engineering in its defence work for national security. Am i right to say so?

03-24-2010, 05:30 PM
Hm, since ST Engineering is an MNC I guess so. ST Engineering does a lot of stuff - ship building (construction), defence, communication, etc. It's a big company.

I don't think DSTA and DSO do stuff strictly for SAF; I'm pretty sure they do collaborations with other countries, but their work is definitely very defence oriented.

03-28-2010, 01:29 AM

03-28-2010, 02:04 AM
i havent gotten any notification yet.. damn it.. did they call u up or send u an email?

03-28-2010, 02:17 AM
in any case.. will they notify u if u have been unsuccessful?

03-28-2010, 02:28 AM
They'll call you then e-mail.

point number 4 in the application:
"Please note that only shortlisted candidates will be notified. Queries on rejection reasons will not be answered."

I think that applies for other scholarships and applications as well.

Hello guys,

ST Engineering accepts the BrightSparks application and many people have applied for ST Engineering via BrightSparks this year. The cut off date on BrightSparks is 21st March. That is why you can no longer apply online. I also checked their web site and u can still get the pdf file downloaded there.

Best of luck!
