I know that for UK universities, you are allowed to defer for at most one year, is this also the case for US unis?

Thanks.

Many private universities such as Stanford, Cornell etc. do grant deferment up to two years as they know that Singaporean males have to do national service before entering universities. However, public universities, most notably those in the UC system such as Berkeley and UCLA, usually do not grant deferments. So if you're thinking of applying there, you should do so during the last year of your national service.

Hope this helps! :)
