A quick search at the MOM's site shows the average monthly pay of a specialised surgeon at SGD 22,196. If your bet is correct, shouldn't this figure be much higher?

Personal experience haha. Yea, a normal surgeon in your public hospitals can take home about 20k a month quite easily, what more those in private practice who charge a lot more! And keep in mind the surgeons in private practice have already completed their training stint in public hospitals, and are thus even more experienced!

About the figure, remember most of the surgeons are not in private practice, so the average salary for a private surgeon is likely to be a lot more skewed than what is average.

You will be correct if the figure that MOM provides only reflects the public sector. If this is so, then MOM isn't very accurate either huh?

it probably relates to all doctors, the number of surgeons in public practice are definitely much more than those in private practice, so the distribution would be skewed. just think if the 50th percentile of all surgeons is at 22k, what about the 75th percentile (which would more closely reflect the average salary of a private surgeon ). Talking about private surgeons here, all consultants and senior consultants summore.

think about it, you check yourself into a private hospital and do a day surgery, chances are it would proabably cost you bout 5-10k. say for the sake of this discussion, about 1-2k goes to your surgeon. All he needs to do is do to 3 of these surgeries 3 times a week, and thats enough already. if we are talking bout stuff like lasik surgery, where like 10 cases can be squeezed into a day, then the numbers are even scarier!

Nope, dentists earned $3000+ while doctors may earn around $3000+ to $5000+. The allied health professionals earned around $2000+ as starting salary. Again, quoted from ecareers.sg
