Exclamation Is Accountancy the right choice??

Hi, I received my A Level results a while ago, now thinking of which uni course to apply.

I was pretty sure I was going to apply for Accountancy. But I've been hearing some negative views from parents about the jobs Accountancy graduates do. Like they have to do false accounts sometimes and that they sometimes have to stay till midnight to finish their work or something. Is that true?

I don't really mind the boring bit about the job and I'm not eyeing on sky high salary. I just don't want to do something that goes against my conscience for the rest of my life.

Need some advice. Thanks!

Hmmm, I am pretty sure every occupation has its pros and cons. If you personally prefer accountancy, don't let all these external uncontrollable factors faze you.

I suggest you go ahead and study accountancy. It can be a very rewarding career if you truly love it.

Honestly doubt there will be many false accounts to handle; like what daviswoddy said there exist checks-and-balances to ensure the integrity of accounts.

Furthermore there are several other courses you can diversify to, such as banking and finance. A professional degree is fairly flexible.

If you feel you are able to cope with the rigour of the curriculum just go for it!

It really depends on which company you work for. Try aiming to work for listed companies. However, even in listed companies, no one knows what is really going on behind the walls. Usually (95 percent of the time), they will not ask to do false account. If it really happens, just leave the company and find a new one.

Generally, people tell me first few years for accountant is a real madness! The working hours are insane! However, you are paid well. When you start to climb up the corporate ladders, your life will be super easy and you will push all the tedious duties to the fresh accountant graduate A few years of suffer, long term enjoyment

In all types of work there are really moments that we have to stay late because we have to make sure that what we are doing is right and we don't want our attention to be called. If its your desire to be an accountancy then go for it, it's a good paying job.

Do note that auditing and accounting are two separate but related fields. Few accountancy fresh grads will start off in accounting. As a matter of fact, most accounting positions require "relevant/prior experience", which is usually taken to mean a few years worked in external audit. 'Accounts Assistant/Executive' positions are typically for diploma holders.

Most accounting fresh grads will head into external audit for about 2-3 years, with many of the top three local varsities' grads usually getting a starting position at one of the Big Four well before graduation.

The attrition rate at the end of the first, second and third years of each batch of Big Four new hires generally hovers around 20%, 40% and 75% respectively. Entry level pay at the Big Four is currently $2,850.

(This is the perspective of an accountancy fresh grad currently in the Big Four. )

Hi, do go ahead if you love accountancy but be prepared for the time and effort required. Besides working as accountant, you can alsor write blog or articles on accounting services in future. =)
