Default Math Teacher Work Study Volunteers in Kenya

The International Humanity Foundation (IHF) is seeking a volunteer Math Teacher for its Nakuru, Kenya children’s home as part of our Volunteer Work-Study Program. As a Math Teacher Work-Study Volunteer, you would complete four hours of local work and four hours of international work a day alongside an international staff dedicated to global development and helping children have access to more opportunities. You will have substantial responsibilities and be a valued part of a grassroots not-for-profit NGO at the ground level.

Our Kenya center is a children’s home and also provides emergency relief to the tribes in East Pokot. This is the biggest IHF center, with approximately 65 children of various ages. The children are from the marginalized Pokot tribe, whose conditions are amongst the worse in Kenya. Living conditions in this region are harsh, and we provide basic needs such as a home, food, and access to education for children who would otherwise go without. We also run livestock donation projects and other initiatives to relieve the extreme poverty where we can.

Your main local task will be teaching Mathematics to supplement the school experience and help to improve grades. You will need to liaise closely with the schools and build lesson plans to complement the national curriculum. You will also be asked to assist with the care of our children and to help organize various activities in the center.

For your international tasks you will be assigned teams made up of volunteers from other centers, and you will work on administrative tasks not just for the Nakuru center, but for the whole organization. Your tasks may include producing media content, assisting with fundraising efforts and generating online outreach efforts to promote our organization’s goals and projects. This is a great opportunity to experience the overall management of an international organization and receive training in a multi-level, multifaceted work environment. Before arrival at the center, you will already become a part of the team by completing pre-trip tasks with our international teams to gain an understanding of the kind of work you will be doing.

Candidate Qualifications: Fluent written and spoken English is required. A qualification in Mathematics teaching is essential. This is an ideal role for recent Mathematics Education graduates. We value volunteers who are creative and innovative, willing to take responsibility and easily adapt to new conditions and unexpected situations. Each IHF center is a product of its environment and follows the cultural code and norms of its host country. So must our staff and interns. Our volunteers must have high inter-cultural sensitivity and be tolerant to different views and ways of life.

Math Teacher Work Study Volunteers stay for a minimum of four weeks. We provide basic accommodation and food at our centers, where you will live with your co-workers. Unfortunately, as a nonprofit we are unable to provide these amenities freely and we charge a minimal cost of $55 / $75 per week. We are not able to cover travel or insurance expenses or any other related costs, but we will help you with your travel and visa planning. We will also work with your university to meet requirements for you to secure credit or external funding when possible.

Please familiarize yourself further with our organization on our website www.ihfonline.org and our blog http://ihfblog.wordpress.com/home/.

Default Apply for a Medical Internship in Nakuru, Kenya

The International Humanity Foundation (IHF) offers a unique Volunteer Internship position at our Nakuru, Kenya children’s home for medical and nursing students. Together with your help, we aim to improve health awareness among our children, their families and our local community.

This position offers the opportunity to gain health-related experience in a low income setting to enhance your CV and set you apart from your peers. You will develop skills related to health promotion and community education, and will practice hands-on application of your medical skills by directly treating minor health problems of the children. You will also learn intimately about the international issues of education, human rights, abuse and poverty as well as local issues such as indigenous rights, land tenure, and ethnic conflicts.

Most importantly, you will be substantially helping those who do not otherwise have the means to access quality and affordable healthcare. By passing on your knowledge to local leaders, your efforts will result in sustainable, long-term changes. You may even have the opportunity to develop and run your own health program.

Candidate Qualifications: You must be fluent in written and spoken English. We prefer candidates who have completed at least the first year of a medical degree or have a basic qualification as a Registered or Community Nurse (newly qualified graduates are welcome). We are looking for people who know basic first aid – a St John’s Ambulance certificate would be desirable— and hold a current Criminal Records Bureau certificate (UK) or International Police Safety Clearance. Experience working or volunteering with children is a major plus.

IHF is run entirely by volunteers, including center co-Directors, fostering a unique work setting. The co-directors at the center will supervise you, listen to your ideas and acknowledge your contributions. Each IHF center is a product of its environment and follows the cultural code and norms of its host country. So must our staff and interns.

The minimum length of an internship is 4 weeks.. We provide basic accommodation and food at our centers, where you will live with your co-workers. Unfortunately, as a nonprofit, we are unable to provide these amenities freely and we charge a minimal cost of $55 - $75 per week. We are not able to cover travel or insurance expenses or any other related costs, but we will help you with your travel and visa planning. If applicable, our organization will work with your university to award you credit whenever possible and will try to comply with any guidelines to secure grant or scholarship funding available at your university.

Default Volunteer Nurse needed for Children’s Home in Kenya

The International Humanity Foundation (IHF) provides a home for children at its center in Nakuru, Kenya. This facility has around 65 children ranging from the age of 6 – 19 years. We have basic medicines and facilities necessary to provide first aid and intervention for common childhood illnesses. We need a nursing volunteer who can provide medical care, assist in health education programs with the children and give counseling support. For more serious conditions or emergencies, the Center Nurse would accompany the child to the nearest hospital in Nakuru. The busiest time for the Center Nurse will be 3pm - 9pm weekday evenings and weekends when the children are not at school. This is a residential volunteer role.

Candidate Qualifications: A Registered Nurse or equivalent with specialization in children’s health or community nursing would be essential. A willingness to pitch in with the wider work within the center to support the children and the ability to live in basic conditions is also required. This is an ideal position for a newly qualified nurse who would like to gain work experience or experience of working in another country/culture.

This is a hugely fulfilling role in a center that has a desperate need for this assistance. Our children are all part of an extended family from East Pokot and are serious about improving their lives and taking their learning back to their community. They deserve a volunteer who will provide not just excellent clinical care, but also warmth and a genuine concern for their well-being.

We provide basic accommodation and food at our centers, where you will live with your co-workers and the children. Unfortunately, as a nonprofit, we are unable to provide these amenities freely and we charge a minimal cost of $75 per week for the first four weeks, $55 per week for the fifth through twelfth weeks and no cost from the thirteenth week on. These costs are to cover room and board, both very simple. We are not able to cover travel or insurance expenses or any other related expenses, but we will help you with your travel and visa planning. We will also work with your university to meet requirements (if applicable) for you to secure credit or external funding when possible.

Philippine Toy Library (PTL) was started by a group of volunteer-friends who came together and took on the challenge of providing the experience of play to our Filipino children. Formally launched in June 12, 2012, Philippine Toy Library (PTL) transforms idle spaces in barangays, schools, parishes, and partner organizations into fun and educational playrooms for the children in the community.

Dreaming of a PTL volunteer group -- a community of friends who will visit PTL communities near them and bring the experience of storytelling, art activities, music, simple games and fun to kids in those PTL communities. A PTL volunteer group who can also help out the core PTL Team in marketing, in database, in monitoring, in fund raising events etc.
