Default Need Some Advice For UK/USA Universities

Hi!

I'm 17 this year currently studying as a JC1. Time seems to fly by quickly, so i thought why not plan for my future University.

I'm interested in the following universities,
Harvard
Princeton
Cambridge

and i plan to pursue a maths degree.

I'm currently taking BCME with H1 in Economics and i'm planning to take on H3 Maths next year.

So I have a few questions in mind,

1) Does secondary school achievements matter? ( As in does it make a difference? e.g ( Elementz Science and Research, NSW or American Math Competitions, SMO )

2) Do we really need straight A's to get to where we want to be? is AABB possible?

3) People say PW Doesn't matter for Overseas University, is that valid?

4) As a male Singaporean, can i apply after my A's just to secure a place and go there after NS?

5) As for Leadership, can Overseas OBS trips be sort of a boost for this aspect?

Appreciate any form of advice/tips/response
Thanks

Hi. For the schools that you are applying for, I'm afraid that you will need at least 4 H2 As to even stand a chance. For some reason (I believe its due to poor academic results, pardon me if I judged wrongly) you are only taking 3 H2s and 1 H1.. Its already a huge disadvantage.

1) Secondary school achievements don't matter at all for cambridge. But it matters to a small extent for harvard/princeton. Mainly, your JC achievements will be the most important.

2) Yes, you need straight As.

3) PW doesn't matter as much, but it does affect your chances. Its an added advantage to have an A in PW.

4) Yes

5) Yes

Thanks for opening this thread, anzhenrox you've got very nice list of target schools there. I think straight A's really matter for these schools to get admitted. Hopefully, following Undercover's advice, you can study to any of your three choices. Goodluck!

Thanks for the response guys!

But something Undercover said, make me wonder. Can a 3H2/1H1 have a shot? considering my SAT scores are considerably good? I took this combi because i didn't want to stress myself, but with my O level i was eligible. Maybe i should have taken 4H2s?

For the Common Application that you'd use for your application to the US universities, there is a column that asks about the rigor of your high school curriculum.

If you're taking 3H2/1H1 with a H3, you wouldn't qualify for the "Most Rigorous" coursework category, which counts against you.

(If any forumers want to correct me, please do. I'm slightly outdated with this application detail.)

4) Not as far as I know, at least for UK universities. The British (Cambridge) teacher-in-charge for my school said that they only hold your place for a year so you've got to apply during NS. Oxbridge *may* be special in this aspect, but probably not.

...Not to be a downer

but harvard and princeton routinely reject 8As at A'levels with Distinction in Olympiads etc.

Having results only doesnt cut it. That being said, Not having results definitely excludes you.

If your A'level score is anything short of AAAA/A, your chances are limited.
