Default List of Special Programmes at NUS/NTU/SMU

Hi everyone!

Ok so I am still researching the 3 Universities. I thought it will be great if we can have a sticky resource on all special programmes offered by the 3 Universities, and any possible introduction and personal experiences in these?

It will be very helpful for the rest of us looking for more than just mugging.

For NUS refer to
http://www.nus.edu.sg/iro/nus/students/index.html

For NTU refer to
http://global.ntu.edu.sg/pages/default.aspx

For SMU does not seem to have that much info:

Default Double Degree Admission Requirements

May I ask how stringent are the requirements for a double degree?

I am interested in an Engineering + Economics DPP in NUS. I've heard only people with 7 distinctions make the cut?

From what I know, it is pretty strict. That is the average grades of those people in the DDP in NUS.
However, the DDP requirement is essentially to take about 8 more modules than normal engineering undergrads. Some students actually make the cut in their 2nd or 3rd year when they decide to take more economics modules and fit the requirement for the Engineering+ economics DDP.

I think, I should be responsible to put this more into context. Well, here goes for my research so far!

Academic programmes

1) Double Degrees (DDP)
Available in all 3 Universities. NUS and NTU have a broader range because they have more schools and faculties. Only NUS and NTU have DDP with foreign Universities.

NUS : http://admissions.nus.edu.sg/course.html
NTU : http://www.ntu.edu.sg/collegesandpro...rgrad.aspx#dbl
SMU : http://www.smu.edu.sg/admissions/smu...jors/index.asp

2) Joint Degree Programmes (JDP)
I discovered it is 1 degree but study in 2 University programme. 2 years in local, 2 years overseas. Graduate with both Uni logos on your Degree scroll! Only NUS has these.

NUS : http://admissions.nus.edu.sg/course.html
NTU : NIL
SMU : NIL

3) Concurrent Degree Programmes/Integrated Degree Programmes
NUS calls it the concurrent and NTU calls it the integrated. But they are the same! Graduate with a Bachelors and a Master in 5 years.
Only NUS and NTU have these.

NUS : http://admissions.nus.edu.sg/course.html
NTU : http://www.ntu.edu.sg/collegesandpro...rgrad.aspx#dbl
SMU : NIL

Science and Technology programmes

NUS : Engineering and Science Faculties only. Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme in Science (UROPS). Get to do research at undergraduate level, and prepare for a research career before you get a Masters!
http://www.science.nus.edu.sg/underg...ops/index.html
http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/urop/

CALTECH-NUS SURF Programme
California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) introduces exchange students to research under the guidance of seasoned research mentors at Caltech and NUS.
http://www.nus.edu.sg/iro/nus/studen...ech/index.html

Global Engineering Programme (GEP)
Complete Bachelor in 3 years and Master in 4th year. 1 semester of bachelor will be at partner overseas Unversity. 4th year Master is full 1 year with a partner overseas University. Special mentoring by Professors, scholarships available, and can do research during undergraduate years.
http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/ugrad/gep.html

NTU : All Science and Engineering students. CN Yang Scholars Programme
http://www.ntu.edu.sg/cnyang-scholar...s/default.aspx

SMU : NIL

Exchange Programmes
Available in all 3 Universities. NUS and NTU has about 200 partner exhcanges each, SMU has about 100 partner exchanges. Only NUS and NTU offer international internships and only NUS offers language programmes on top of the regular exchanges.

NUS : http://www.nus.edu.sg/iro/nus/students/index.html
NTU : http://global.ntu.edu.sg/global/inst...s/default.aspx
SMU : http://www.smu.edu.sg/international_exchange/index.asp

Special Programmes
I will break this down into the 3 Unis as they don't really compare well as a group.

NUS has 2. Namely the University Scholars Programme (USP) and the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC).

USP is a liberal arts programme similiar to those offered in USA. USP is for students to read more modules across NUS. USP students get to design their own majors too! http://www.usp.nus.edu.sg/

NOC is a programme to train entrepreneurs. Students will be interned in a startup company in one of 6 locations for 1 year:
Bangalore (INDIA)
Beijing (CHINA)
Bio Valley (USA)
Stockholm (SWEDEN)
Shanghai (CHINA)
Silicon Valley (USA)
Student will take night classes in a partner university while doing the internship.
http://www.overseas.nus.edu.sg/

NTU has 2. Namely the Global Immersion Programme (GIP) and the Global Discovery Programme

GIP is a 1 semester programme for students to:
Study overseas
Study and and be interned overseas
Conduct research overseas
http://www.ntu.edu.sg/gip/Pages/default.aspx

The Global Discovery Programme seems to be a toned down exchange programme, spanning only 4 weeks to visit a foreign country.
http://global.ntu.edu.sg/global/Pages/gdp.aspx

SMU has none.

There are chances of poly students going uni..why not you start the thread rolling? =)

jc ppl are more kiasu i guess , so there so many threads and speculation

chances of poly stud takin DDP are not high..anyway even if its jc students takin DDP, it is definitely not easy. there are many cases of multiple distinction scorers( i mean 6As at least) forgoeing 1 of their 2 degrees when they are in loca uni. simply becoz its too hard to manage. Uni life is not just about juggling 2 degrees. And the impression of 2 degrees will change from the point you just graduated from high school to the turning point when you start uni.

Added CALTECH-NUS SURF programme.

Thanks seniors. Please let me know if I left out anything, and I will continue to edit them in, or post updates.

Dear mod, can del the 2 replies just above mine? Sorry I would like this thread to be "clean" so that it is easy to see the list without having to go through 5 pages. Thanks!
