Smile NTU Hall Life

Hi hi!

are there any seniors who care to share?

Is the hall life very active?
What type of rooms are there?

I'm not a senior, and I'll only be matriculating this year.

From what I read on the websites, all first year will only be allocated double rooms.

In the following years, you can bid for single room subject to availability.

Approximately half of the halls out of 18 are in good conditions because of the upgrading before YOG and they come with Air condition.

The other remaining 6 halls are relatively old and do not have Air condition.

That is as much as I know, if i'm not wrong. You can find out more from the NTU website.

1) Types of rooms
Newer (looking) halls: 3, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16
Older halls: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 (no air-conditioning)
'in between': 8, 9, 10

I strongly encourage you to opt for the air-conditioned halls 'cause you'll probably get the newer halls. The environment there is pretty nice, clean-cut, new furniture thanks to YOG.

2) Hall life is only active if you join Hall camp, where you'll meet the bulk of your hall friends who will all probably want to join things like JCRC (a kind of hall council with different committees) and planning the next year's Hall camp & Dinner and Dance which can be pretty fun. Aside from that, making friends means you'll most likely end up meeting constantly for supper or hanging out in each other's rooms, especially during the first few weeks of the semester. While hall life can still be fun if you don't join camp, you'll have to depend on having friends from your course staying in the same or around your hall. But still, joining hall camp would make your hall stay a lot more fulfilling.

don't think it'll be treated any differently from the rest. 1st years strictly double rooms only.

Room size varies from hall to hall. I find that the older halls (1, 2, 4-7?) have bigger rooms. Double rooms are also bigger than single rooms (quite obvious hahah). Toilets are communal in all halls except 1 and 2. All floors have 2 (or more?) toilets with shower and toilet cubicles inside. Hall 1 and 2 have ensuite toilets in the sense that 2 rooms share 1 toilet. As for conditions, I'd say the ones in the newer halls (8-15) are better cause they were renovated. Not sure if the toilets in the older halls have been renovated.

As for other facilities, each floor generally has a pantry, and each block one laundry room and TV lounge, unless the block is really big. I can only speak for the newer halls since I stay in one myself. My hall, and I assume other newer halls, has a reading room, a study room, as well as a computer room with printing facilities. Some halls have their own canteen (have to pay to eat, not like NUS where meals are inclusive I think), while others share a canteen with their neighbour hall.

Some halls have gates dividing the male and female floors as well. And the newer halls use a keycard for the door (just tap) instead of keys. Older ones use keys.

That's all I can think of for the moment! Sorry if some stuff are repeated!
